Competition Pool Open In Sonora

A new swimming pool is now open at a Sonora fitness center.

The recently completed “competition spec” pool opened for swimmers about a week ago. According to Tim Gallagher, managing partner with the Sonora Sport and Fitness Center, the new pool is 13 feet-deep at the deepest end and holds 407,394 gallons of 80-degree water. The project started with the permit process in October 1997, Gallagher said. Construction was completed Feb. 14 of this year.

He said the center would like to host league swimming championships and will run Tuolumne County Aquatics swim team meets. He hopes to develop diving and water polo teams. The existing pool, which is less than a quarter of the size of the new pool, will be used for recreational and fitness swimming.
