CHP Plans Increased Seatbelt Enforcement

Next month, the California Highway Patrol will be watching extra closely for people who aren´t wearing their seatbelts.

CHP spokesman Tom Wills says the stepped up enforcement is being funded through a federal grant. The program is designed to see what effect maximum enforcment of seatbelt laws will have. Wills says the effort will last from about May 19th until the end of the month.

Wills says there have already been 6 fatal accidents in the Sonora area this year, in which 8 people were killed. He adds that in 37% of fatal accidents, the people who were killed were not wearing their seatbelts.
