Workers Comp Legislation Clears Hurdle

Workers´ compensation insurance companies would have to certify that their claims adjusters meet minimum qualifications set by the state under a bill that´s been approved by the California Assembly. The measure by Assemblywoman Barbara Matthews of Tracy was sent to the Senate today by a 53-21 vote.

Critics say that poor performances by the adjusters have resulted in significant delays in benefit payments to injured workers and contributed to higher costs in the workers´ compensation system.

Matthews´ bill would require the State Insurance Department to adopt regulations setting minimum qualifications for claims adjusters and require insurers to certify that their adjusters meet those standards.
