By Pass Open

It´s officially open….

After three years of construction, and more than 20 years planning, drivers started cruising down the new 3-mile, $70-million East Sonora Bypass this morning.

Standard Road on-ramp was opened just before 7 this morning with some of the first cars being escorted west bound by law enforcement.

There was a fury of activity overnight by Caltrans work crews with signal lights adjusted, barricades removed and final road striping completed.

The opening was delayed by several weeks due to a hang up of switching control of the by-passed old section of highway from state to county jurisdiction. That topic was hotly debated at Tuesday´s Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors session.
