New Melones Fire Update

Fire units are battling a wildfire burning at New Melones Lake on the Tuolumne County side. The fire is off Highway 49 about 1/4 mile east of the New Melones Visitors Center.

The fire was first reported at 3:45 p.m. this afternoon and is spreading quickly. Officials say it´s about 75 acres in size.

Sheriff Boat Patrol Deputies are asking boaters in that area of the lake to make room for firefighters. The boats are interferring with helicopters trying to get water out of the lake. Aircraft and helicopters are dropping water and retardant on the fire and additional ground units are heading that way.

Fire officials and law enforcement are also urging motorists parked along the highway near the bridge to keep moving. The parked cars are causing traffic congestions and hindering firefighters getting into the area.

So far, law enforcement and fire officials have evacuated one home in the Jackass Hill area with possibly more evacations forthcoming.

We´ll keep you updated.
