Memorial Planned For Fallen Firefighter

Memorial services for 24-year-old state firefighter Eva Schicke are scheduled Monday at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp at 2 p.m..

State fire officials say they expect thousands of firefighters from across California to honor Schicke, who died Sunday while fighting a wildfire in the Tuolumne River canyon.

That fire on the Stanislaus National Forest is now 70 percent contained and has burnt 750 acres.

According to CDF officials, the seven-member crew was overrun by flames about an hour after being deployed. All six of Schicke´s fellow crewmembers were injured, but only one sustained moderate injuries.

An autopsy was performed yesterday.

She is the first female firefighter from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to die in the line of duty.

The family has requested those wishing to send cards, letters or flowers should direct them to the family in care of either the CDF´s Arnold Fire Station, 2517 Highway 4, Arnold, CA 95223 or the Ebbetts Pass Fire Protection District Station 1, 1028 Manuel Road, Arnold, CA 95223.

A memorial fund has been established at Merchants National Bank and checks should be made payable to CDF Firefighters Eva Schicke Memorial Fund and mailed to Merchants National Bank, P.O. Box 747, Sacramento, CA 95812.
