Calaveras County Head Start Program Celebrates Twenty Years

San Andreas, CA — Calaveras County´s Head Start preschool program is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this weekend.

The first Head Start facility was started in West Point in 1985 and has since grown to seven locations around the county, staffing 85 teachers, cooks and other staff members.

Calaveras County was one of the last counties in California to start the federal program which began nationwide in 1965.

The Head Start program was initially created to serve special needs children and those from families unable to afford commercial preschools.

The 20-year celebration will be held from 2 to 4 Saturday afternoon at Turner Park in San Andreas.
