Americans Will Need Passports To Enter US Via Mexico and Canada

Tuesday´s announcement that Americans will need passports to enter the United States from both Mexico and Canada by 2008 was seen by many border crossers in San Diego as yet another, unnecessary burden.

Waits at the crossings linking San Diego and Tijuana already stretch more than two hours at peak times. Augie Ghio, San Diego´s director of homeland security, called the change a necessary step, such as the tighter security that travelers have experienced at airports since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

San Diego is home to the world´s busiest border crossing, with more than 48 million people entering the United States at the western-most Port of Entry last year.
