State Police Release Memorial Day Weekend Statistics

SACRAMENTO (AP) __ California Highway Patrol officials say 39 people died in California traffic accidents over the Memorial Day weekend — up by two from last year.

C-H-P spokesman Tom Marshall says the statistics collected over the holiday also showed that more people were using seat-belts and that drunken driving arrests fell by 200 from last year.

Between Friday evening and midnight Monday, about 1540 people were arrested for driving under the influence.

Last year, that number was 1760.
