Sheriffs Plead For Jail Money

San Andreas, CA — Sheriffs across the state are reminding legislators about the need for adequate jails.

A special legislative session on prisons recently convened.

Calaveras County Sheriff Dennis Downum says the California State Sheriffs´ Association wants the state to put forward a bond measure that would help pay for county jails.

Downum says the Calaveras jail is recognized as about the worst situation in the state.

He says as of January, 1,200 inmates were released early in Calaveras due to jail overcrowding.

If the bond measure were to pass and Calaveras County received money for a new jail, Downum says a local match would likely be required. For that, he says, the county would need to go to the voters with some sort of assessment.
