High School Exit Exam May Be On Hold

Sponsored by:

Alameda, CA — An Alameda County Superior Court judge issued a tentative ruling late Monday indicating he is likely to prohibit the state´s high school exit exam from taking effect this year.

Judge Robert Freedman is siding with attorneys who say the exam discriminates against poor students and those who are learning English.

A group of high school students and their parents sued the state Department of Education in February seeking a preliminary injunction to halt application of the exam for this year´s senior class. Both sides are scheduled to appear today before Judge Freedman in Oakland.

Freedman said in his tentative ruling that he is likely to issue the injunction based on the plaintiffs´ argument that all students do not have access to the same quality of education.
