Jamestown Mine Cleanup Issue Settled

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — By a unanimous vote, the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors today approved the settlement documents between the state of California, the county and other parties regarding the Jamestown Mine.

This opens the door for the long overdue cleanup effort.

Five years ago, the state attorney general´s office sued the county and other mine owners on behalf of the Regional Water Quality Control Board claiming that waste from the former gold mine along Highway 108 had polluted the ground and surface water. When the courtroom dust settled last year, the county agreed to pay $6 million to settle the case.

With the settlement in place, a Baton Rouge, Louisiana firm is now scheduled to start the cleanup work June 1.
