DMV Could Be Crowded Due To New Law

Sacramento, CA — 24 million California drivers may have to head to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get new licenses.
A law passed by Congress last year called the Real ID Act is intended to combat terrorism by making it tougher to forge an identification card.
State officials are trying to prevent the implementation of the new law, saying the potential chaos is unimaginable.
To make a new license Real ID compliant, drivers will have to present a birth certificate and proof of residency.
A DMV spokesman says they are trying to get answers before the 2008 compliance deadline. A state Senate panel will begin hearings on the potential effects of the Read ID Act this week.
