Board Of Supervisors Hear Report On Jamestown Landfill

Sonora, Ca — Tuolumne County has hit a bump in the road in the process of closing the Jamestown Landfill.

In 2004 the county approved a contract to close the landfill, and meet the environmental requirements to do so. Following the closure work, the clay cover on the west slope started to show signs of slippage, and was ultimately deemed to have “failed” by the Regional Water Quality Control Board.

A plan was drawn up to fix the problem, and the county was set to begin the process of advertising the project to contractors this week. The plan has been postponed, however, as last week inspectors observed that a new slide has occurred on the east slope of the landfill.

Prompt action was initiated to cover the slide with plastic to prevent further worsening of the problem. During a follow-up visit, a design team observed evidence of additional areas of concern on the east slope in addition to the slide. The Board of Supervisors was given this report at today´s meeting.
