Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — In an effort to educate residents about West Nile virus, the Calaveras County Public Health Department has put out a list of prevention guidelines.

The virus is established in birds and mosquitoes in Calaveras but can only be transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

The department urges residents to prevent being bitten and be aware of the signs of illness.

Prevention:

– Drain standing water

– Repair or install tight fitting screens on windows and doors

– Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn.

– Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

– Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks.

Signs of illness include fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes nausea or vomiting.
