T.U.D. Water Conservation Efforts Discussed By Supervisors

Sponsored by:

Sonora, Ca — The General Manager of the Tuolumne Utilities District discussed the county´s water conservation efforts at Tuesday´s Board of Supervisors meeting.

Recently, TUD began asking customers to voluntarily cut back on usage by 20%. Pete Kampa says the county is being proactive. Are we going to run out of water this year, the answer is no,” said Kampa. This year we expect the reservoirs to fill with 24,000 acre feet of water, which is the maximum storage. Unfortunately, we will see minimal additional runoff after mid May and the reservoirs will drop quickly.”

Kampa notes that on a typical year, the district will see runoff continue into July. He says that if customers do not cut back usage, the county will use up its regular supply which is allocated based on the Department of Water Resources Forecast. If that happens, TUD would have to purchase water from PG&E. That, Kampa says, would cost around $6,000 per day.
