Sonora, CA — A man who is described as a local transient is ingrave condition” after trying to outrun law enforcement in Sonora earlier this week.

On Wednesday night members of the Tuolumne Narcotics Team, Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department and State Parole were attempting to locate a parolee-at-large, 36 year old Raymond Lee Engle, on Serrano Rd. Engle had an active parole violation warrant and he was thought to be at a residence in the area. As the officers arrived, Engle fled on foot.

He was pursued by Deputy Rivera, Detective Burr and Detective Moses. According to the Sheriff´s Department, Deputy Rivera was able to catch Engle and order him to the ground where he was handcuffed without incident. Deputy Rivera, with assistance from Detectives Burr and Moses helped him to his feet and began walking him back to the residence when Engle complained of shortness of breath and fell to the ground, unconscious. They called for medical assistance seeing that he had no pulse and was not breathing. Deputy Rivera and Detective Burr reportedly began CPR while Detective Moses went to direct the ambulance to their isolated location.

EMS personnel eventually arrived and relieved the officers, ultimately transporting Engle to Tuolumne General Hospital. The Sheriff´s Department says that while Engle´s condition is grave, the quick actions of personnel allowed him to survive until more advanced life saving equipment could be deployed. Engle has since been transported to a hospital in Modesto.
