Second Rock Slide Hits Yosemite

Yosemite National Park, CA — A second rock slide in as many days occurred in Yosemite National Park at seven o´clock this morning.

Three visitors received minor injuries during the incident. All three were treated and released. The rockfall destroyed an estimated seven visitor cabins; two hard sided and three tent cabins. At least three other cabins received partial damage.

Approximately 1,000 people were evacuated from 400 cabins in the Curry Village area.

Ranger Adrienne Freeman stated the size of the rockslide, 1,800 cubic yards, is considered major but not surprising. Precipitation and the thaw of snow and ice will increase the instability of rocks.

Freeman believes the heavy precipitation of this past weekend could have been the cause of the two slides. The first occured Tuesday in the same general vicinity. No one was injured.
