Hewlett Foundation Recognizes Columbia College

Columbia, Ca — Columbia College received statewide recognition today for its efforts to increase the success of students in basic skills.

Columbia and three other colleges were named ?Hewlett Leaders In Student Success? at an educators conference in Anaheim.

?They cited us as a college offering an inspiring model of institutional commitment to basic skills with respect to mission, planning and practice,? says Columbia President Dr. Joan Smith.

Columbia College began an overhaul of basic education programs three years ago, and strengthened the counseling, tutoring and student support services. Only four of California´s 109 community colleges were selected for the award.

Columbia will receive a stipend of $15,000 to support efforts to share their strategies with other schools. The award was given out by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
