Senator Cox Offers Plan To Improve Children’s Healthcare

Sacramento, Ca — 1st District State Senator Dave Cox would like California to reprioritize reserve funds within the First Five Commissions.

The First Five Commissions were created in 1998 when voters approved Proposition 10. The initiative created a 50 percent tax on cigarettes which generates approximately $580 million per year for early childhood development.

“Many of the commissions are sitting on the money,” said Cox during his weekly Capital Report. “In fact they are sitting on nearly $2.5 billion. This is money not being used to help kids.”

Cox has presented a bill to place a measure on the ballot asking voters to reprioritize the funding so that it goes directly into providing healthcare coverage for children.

The bill would eliminate the 58 local commissions and the state commission.
