Summer 2009 Shows Little Drop In Tuolumne County Tourism

While major cities throughout the western USA have seen drops in tourism by twenty to forty percent, Tuolumne County has seen only a small drop in the number of visitors this Summer.

Nancy Sikes, Executive Director for the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau was Friday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

According to Sikes, the number of both international and in-state visitors remains on par with last year. The only drop seems to be from US residents outside of the State of California.

Cities throughout the western half of the USA have seen major drops in tourism this Summer, where some cities such as Denver and Seattle, are experiencing a loss as high as 40% compared to last year. The two overall exceptions seems to be the state of Utah and the Motherlode in California.

Sikes continues to monitor the possibility of the closure of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown and/or Columbia State Park after Labor Day weekend. The Governor has a list of one hundred or so State Parks that will close for possibly up to two years, but so far that list has not been publically released.
