Yosemite Rockslide Closes West Entrance

Sponsored by:

Yosemite Valley, CA– A rockslide has prompted State transportation officials to close all lanes of Highway 140 leading into Yosemite National Park.

The CHP says officials closed the highway late this morning, shutting down the park’s western entrance. No damage was reported.

Rangers say the rockslide occurred inside the park’s boundary about a mile from the Yosemite View Lodge just west of the park’s Arch Rock Entrance. The lodge is near the Ferguson rockslide, which buried the same highway in 3 million cubic yards of rock and debris in April of 2006.

Due to additional loose rocks, as well as the blocked road, Highway 140/El Portal Road will remain closed for at least 24 hours while Yosemite Road Crews access the area of the rockfall and remove all obstructions and safety concerns from the roadway.

Both Highways 120 and 41 into Yosemite National Park remain open.
