Yosemite Valley, CA– Yosemite National Park will be participating in the 111th Annual Christmas Bird Count coming up Sunday, December 19th.

This is the 79th year that Yosemite National Park is participating in the event that also include tens of thousands of volunteers from across the country. Volunteers will be assigned to different areas throughout Yosemite to observe and count a wide variety of bird species. This important day will help Yosemite National Park Biologists, and biologists throughout the country to assess the varieties and quantities of birds observed. Results of the bird count will be published in the National Audubon Society Field Note.

Last year’s event had 47 participants who counted and identified 1,771 birds of 59 species in the park. Participants saw species missed the previous year, such as a great blue heron, northern pygmy-owl, white-headed woodpecker, and cedar waxwing.
