California Counties Seek Relief From Mandate

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA– Today Tuolumne County and twenty-two other California Counties filed a suit in Sacramento Superior Court requesting that the AB 3632 mandate be declared suspended.

AB 3632 is the bill that required counties to provide mental health services to special education students.

“The issue facing the County of Tuolumne is that the State failed to provide funding for a mandated service,” said Chair of the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Liz Bass. “Like most counties, Tuolumne County is facing severe budget limitations. Without the funding from the State for AB 3632 mandated services, the County may be unable to redirect its limited resources to provide those services.”

County Administrator Craig Pedro also commented, “All local officials are saddened by the Governor’s veto and hope that something will be done soon to reverse this action.”

In the meantime, the Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, County Administrator, and Human Services Agency staff are working together to ensure that the needs of local children are met.
