GROVELAND – The Groveland Fire Dept. responded Friday night to reports of a plane down and a fire in Tuolumne County.

According to Fox 40 News, witnesses at a nearby hotel say a plane caught on fire as it was attempting to land at  the Pine Mountain Lake Airport.

The Associated Press reports that a spokesman for the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said crews responded to a crash of a single-engine plane around 7:20 p.m. Friday just outside the Pine Mountain Lake Airport.

Preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration says a Piper Saratoga crashed and was destroyed by impact and fire. FAA officials believe two people were on board with the plane heading from San Carlos to Pine Mountain Lake Airport.

The plane went down on Clements Road at Hemlock Street near the Airport, according to Tuolumne County Sheriff’s dispatch.

Groveland Fire couldn’t disclose any other information, but did say their crews were on scene.
