Mariposa County Struggles

Sponsored by:

Mariposa County continues to struggle through the current economic recession.

Lyle Turpin, District Two Supervisor and resident of Mariposa County for sixty four years, was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Lately, Turpin has witnessed several businesses having to close their doors for good while some small businesses are struggling to keep their doors open, only on the weekends.

Sales tax revenue continues to fall throughout the county, which relies heavily, if not almost single handidly, on tourism. Jobs within the lumber industry, once an economic mainstay, are almost now non-existent.

According to Turpin, the relationship with Tuolumne County is fairly harmonious. Both counties share the borders of Lake Don Pedro and Yosemite National Park. Sonora is a shopping hub for several northern Mariposa County residents. Turpin has known Tuolumne County Supervisor John Gray for an estimated fifty years.

Supervisor Turpin will be attending the grand reopening of the Northern Mariposa County History Center in Coulterville, from 1 to 5 pm, on Saturday February 6th. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $15. More information is available by calling (209) 878-3750.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
