Calaveras Supervisors Study Library System

Sponsored by:

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors held a study session on Tuesday regarding the Calaveras County Library system.

Calaveras County Librarian Marie Hoekstra was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

The Calaveras County Library system is made up of the central location in San Andreas and seven branches in Arnold, Angels Camp, Copperopolis, Mokelumne Hill, Murphys, Valley Springs and West Point.

Over the past two years, 5,250 new library cards have been issued.

“There has been a large increase in use of the library system, ” Hoedkstra said, “many of our users have limited resources and cannot afford internet access or subscribe to needed resources.”

The Board of Supervisors discussed three issues. A vote will soon be taken on a staffing update, possibly changing a vacant full time position to two part time positions.

The Supervisors were updated on internet usage in the library and a proposal to establish good behavior policies. Waiting for available computers can sometimes lead to “stressful” situations. Additionally, some of the computers need to be updated and two branches need wireless access.

Funding is a constant issue but Hoekstra appreciates the “Friends of the Library” which helps out with landscaping projects and voluntary fundraising opportunities.
