West Point, CA– Two men were arrested after a high speed chase near West Point this week.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Monday afternoon, a pickup truck matching a description of a vehicle involved in several recent burglaries, was located.

Sheriff’s Deputies observed the vehicle near the intersection of Matson Lane and Main Street in West Point. The driver of the vehicle, 44-year-old Brett Gray of Pioneer failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Pine Street and Highway 26.

When deputies initiated a traffic stop, Gray did not pull over. Instead, he led deputies on a 3-mile chase that reached speeds of 60 miles per hour.  Gray finally stopped his vehicle near the end of Spink Road and fled the scene on foot. After a foot chase of about 300 yards, deputies took Gray into custody without incident.

During a search of Gray’s vehicle, deputies found used syringes, suspected methamphetamine, a billy club, and a 9.2 ounce can of pepper spray.

Gray was booked at the Calaveras County Jail on several charges including: evading a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, possession of an illegal weapon, possession of more than 2.5 ounces of pepper spray and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Gray also had two misdemeanor warrants.

The passenger, Stephen Gommeringer, was arrested and booked for possession of a controlled substance. Gray is being held on $27,500 bail and Gommeringer is being held on $15,000 bail.
