Back To School Time

San Andreas, CA– It’s back to school time next week at the Calaveras Unified School District.

District Superintendent Mark Campbell says that compared to previous years, enrollment numbers have changed just slightly this year.

“Projected enrollment is set to be down a little bit from last year by about 15 to 20 students,” said Campbell. “Most of our attrition of late has been driven by the economy and families needing to relocate.”

Campbell says with recent state budget cuts, the district will also see fewer teachers returning.

“We laid off 9 teachers and as a result have had to increase our class sizes as well,” said Campbell. “We’ve increased our elementary class sizes to 30 students per class, where it was previously at 24.”

Although the CUSD Superintendent says he believes his teaching staff will work even harder this year to accommodate the changes, he knows it will be a challenge for teachers to give students the same degree of individual attention as in the past.
