The Race Is On

Tuolumne, CA– The annual Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee kicked off today and runs through Sunday.

Along with the celebration of our local historic lumber industry, the Jubilee at Tuolumne Memorial Park will also feature a Soap Box Derby.

Last year 18-year-old Jaime Smith planned and put on the first All American Soap Box Derby race in Tuolumne County since before WWII. His senior project even raised the funds to accomplish a $25,000 road resurfacing project for the Soap Box Track.

Brad Smith, Soap Box Derby coordinator and parent of Jaime Smith said, “Last July was the first All-American race in the county since 1940 with about 30 kids. We partnered up with the folks at the Lumber Jubilee and it was very successful. I have never met anyone who participates in Soap Box Derby who just doesn’t fall in love with it.”

The race on Sunday is presented by the non-profit Northern California Soap Box Derby Association and supported by donations. About a dozen soap box cars are sponsored by organizations like the Shriners, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs.

“It’s a free event to attend the Lumber Jubilee and the Soap Box Derby,” added Smith. “We just encourage folks to come out this weekend and cheer the kids on. Check out a piece of Tuolumne County and Americana and enjoy the weather.”
