Possible Cutbacks At School District

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA– Cutbacks in the Sonora Union High School District may soon be a possibility as a result of state budget concerns.

During this week’s district board meeting, proposed cuts to staff including the reduction of teachers was discussed.

“Right now I’ve recommended to the board and the board accepted issuing cautionary notices to about 12 ½ teachers,” said district superintendent Mike McCoy. “That could be a teacher put on part time status from full time or it could mean a full time reduction. For our classified staff, that’s all our support staffers, bus drivers, custodians and office staff.”

McCoy says if voters do not approve the state’s proposed temporary taxes on a June referendum, the district could face a budget shortfall of up to $1.7 million.
