Hundreds Of New Laws

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Governor Jerry Brown signed 805 bills over the past year and vetoed 96.

Many of the new laws will take effect on January 1st. Several of the bills focused on the rights of employees and immigrants. Following the path of New York and Hawaii, California will require that domestic workers be paid overtime if they put in more than 9 hours a day, or 45 hours per week.

Agriculture and landscaping workers will receive mandatory rest breaks during hot weather.

Transgender school students will be allowed to choose which bathroom they want to use (male or female) and the types of sports or activities they take part in.

Law enforcement agencies will no longer be allowed to deport immigrants that are arrested for only minor crimes. Immigrants in the country illegally will now be allowed to receive a license to practice law.

Some new laws will take effect at later dates. An increase in California’s minimum wage will start in July when it goes up to $9 an hour. It will then jump to $10 in 2016. Also, a law granting immigrants in the country illegally the chance to receive a driver’s license will take effect in 2015.

This is a snapshot of some of the most highly publicized laws that were signed by the Governor.
