Protest Over Native American Burial Ground

Sponsored by:

About a dozen American Indians picketed a new shopping center in Emeryville yesterday to protest the fact that it

was built over a former burial ground.

The site was once among the largest known American-Indian shell mounds in the San Francisco Bay area.

Shell mounds were a central part of life among some bands of Ohlone Indians and this one was 2,700 years old.

Picketers passed out fliers explaining that American Indians are buried under the shops. The protest is the second since the Bay Street shopping center opened earlier this month. The Emeryville City Council approved the project despite such protests.
