Nancy Pelosi Named House Minority Leader

Sponsored by:

San Francisco Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi has become the first women ever to head a political party caucus in Congress.

House Democrats this morning chose her on a 177-to-29 vote to succeed Dick Gephardt of Missouri.

Democrats are hoping the 62-year-old liberal can revive a party staggered by election setbacks and having to deal with the fact the White House and both houses of Congress are controlled by Republicans.

Gephardt ended his eight years as party leader after the November fifth election where Republicans cemented their control over the House and won back the majority in the Senate.
