Amber Network Use Studied

Sponsored by:

State officials are planning to restrict the use of California´s child abduction alerts. They fear the two-week-old system could quickly become a victim of its own success.

They´re planning to set thresholds for which cases will qualify for the public alert. Otherwise, they say overuse will overload the Amber Alert system.

The system will likely be saved for times when a child under age 17 has been abducted; is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death; and where there is information that could help the public assist in the victim´s safe recovery.

A pending bill rules out the system´s use in custody disputes where the child is not believed to be in danger.
