No Gambling Initiative

Sponsored by:

An anonymous group has withdrawn an ambitious ballot initiative in San Diego that would have loosened state restrictions on gambling and ended the monopoly of Indian tribes in the casino business.

Group spokesman Craig Marlar says he withdrew the measure last week after backers decided it was too costly to get it on the November ballot.

The measure would have allowed currently licensed gambling businesses to offer most forms of gambling, including craps, roulette, unlimited slots and sports bets.

Current law restricts casinos to only Indian lands, which are limited to card games and a set number of slot machines.
