Prison Labor Boosts State Economy

A study by a UC Berkeley economist says prison labor provides a substantial boost to the state´s economy.
George Goldman is with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Cal´s College of Natural Resources. His study says prison labor contributed $230 million in sales to the California economy from 1997 to 1998.
Goldman says the California Prison Industry Authority offers inmates more than 65 types of jobs in the service, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
Goldman´s report also says prison jobs add to local economies by generating sales and jobs in the community.
