UC Eyes Budget Cuts

Sponsored by:

University of California officials are looking at the prospect of excluding thousands of would-be students after closing the doors to hundreds earlier this month.

Leaders of the nine-campus system are meeting in San Francisco today to discuss ways to weather upcoming budget cuts. Options include raising fees by as much as 18-hundred dollars, having some students spend their first two years at a community college and charging higher fees to students from wealthier families. Regent’s won´t make final decisions until January when they see what’s in the governor’s proposed budget for next year. But lawmakers have already told UC and the California State University system that they will not be funding enrollment growth next year.
