Critics Join Fight Against Forest Plan

Sponsored by:

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Attorney General Bill Lockyer and state resources secretary Mary Nichols are joining critics of federal plans to manage 11 million acres of Sierra Nevada forest area.

Environmental groups gathered more than 30,000 postcards and letters to be sent to the U.S. Forest Service protesting Bush administration changes to the plan adopted in the closing days of the Clinton administration. They say those changes will triple the amount of logging on federal land in the Sierra under the guise of fire prevention.

The Forest Service denies any Bush administration influence on the revisions it says will help curb fire danger. The deadline to comment on the proposed revisions is Friday. A final decision is expected by mid-November.
