Latest Holiday Death Toll

The California Highway Patrol says there were 31 traffic deaths in the first 60 hours of the Labor Day weekend. The toll matches the 31 fatalities during the same holiday period a year ago from Friday evening through 6 a.m. Monday.

The CHP says that a year ago the most dangerous period for California traffic was on the Labor Day holiday itself when 14 people died in an 18-hour period. The highway patrol says eleven of the 21 vehicle occupants killed this weekend in accidents in its jurisdiction were not wearing seat restraints.

This holiday period´s traffic toll also includes two pedestrians and one motorcyclist.

The California Highway Patrol says driving under the influence arrests statewide number 1,408, which is slightly higher than the count for the same Labor Day holiday period last year.
