Prop 54 Ruling Win

Sponsored by:

A Sacramento judge has ordered the ballot summary language of Proposition 54 changed.

The ruling Friday by Superior Court Judge Gail Ohanesian mandates that the ballot summary track the actual language of the initiative. Proposition 54, known as the “Racial Privacy Initiative” would bar the state from collecting information on a person´s race, ethnicity, color or national origin.

The ballot summary stated that “all medical and healthcare subject matter” was exempt from Proposition 54. The judge ordered the exemption clause changed to read “medical research subjects and patients.”

An attorney with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which brought the case to court, called Friday´s ruling “a huge victory for the voters of California.”
