Lt. Governor Wants Vehicle Tax Rollback

Sponsored by:

Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante is proposing a tax swap that would roll back the recent increase in the vehicle license fee and replace that revenue with higher taxes on alcohol, tobacco and the wealthy. He said the recent tripling of the V-L-F put an unfair burden on working class families.

Bustamante says he´s talked to Governor Davis and some legislators about rolling back the V-L-F increase and replacing that approximately $4 billion in revenue with higher liquor and tobacco taxes and higher income taxes on wealthier Californians.

He says the revenue-neutral swap could be done by simple majority votes in the Legislature instead of the two-thirds majorities needed to raise taxes.
