Assembly Remains in Session After All Nighter on Budget

Sponsored by:

The Assembly is still struggling to approve the state budget, even after an all-night floor session. A compromise budget plan so far can´t get the votes it needs to pass.

Six Democrats won´t support the plan and just four Republicans are casting “yes” votes. The budget has been put “on call.” Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson is refusing to let lawmakers leave the floor. The Assembly is still in session after spending most of yesterday afternoon and evening behind closed doors.

Wesson and Republican leader Dave Cox are backing the plan that uses a combination of spending cuts, borrowing and higher fees to deal with a record deficit. Both are trying to persuade colleagues to vote for the budget.

Wesson, a Democrat from Culver City, blames Republicans for not delivering promised support.

The failure of the compromise is a disappointment for Governor Davis, who is facing a recall election in October. The state´s budget crisis is now 29 days old and a quick resolution could give Davis a boost in the polls.
