CSU Officials Say Campus Drinking Declining

Sponsored by:

Officials of California State University say a 2-year-old effort to fight alcohol-related problems at their campuses is producing results.

The initiative, which combines education and enforcement, was enacted in October 2000 after two students at San Diego State were hospitalized with alcohol poisoning, and a third student at Cal State Chico died following a drinking binge.

Preliminary results show student alcohol use at CSU campuses has fallen five to ten percent, and there have been significantly fewer alcohol-related judicial cases, drunken driving violations and property damage cases related to drinking.

The results are to be presented to CSU trustees next week.
