Hidden Gun Used On Officers

Sponsored by:

Shasta County sheriff´s officials say officers failed to find a gun on a speeding driver who later shot two deputies.

Officers arrested John Edward Knowles and Jeremy Ross Ivey of Shasta Lake on Friday after pulling them over for speeding and finding drugs in the car. But Undersheriff Larry Schaller said yesterday that Knowles was improperly searched. Moments later, on the way to jail, Knowles allegedly produced a gun and shot the driver, Deputy Robert Sandbloom. Four hours later, Knowles allegedly shot Deputy Tom Moon before he was shot five times by other officers.

The two have yet to be charged, because Knowles remains hospitalized. Ivy was booked on outstanding warrants and is being held on half a million dollars bail. Schaller says that missing the gun was a training failure and the department is already working on emphasizing the importance of a thorough search of arrested individuals.
