Quake Jolts Central Coast

Sponsored by:

No damages or injuries are reported in a moderate quake that hit California´s Central Coast this afternoon. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 and struck at 2:29 p.m. just south of Hollister.

The quake was felt as far away as Salinas and Monterey. Hollister police and others who felt it describe it as a strong, sharp jolt accompanied by a loud boom. The U.S. Geological Survey says it originated about five miles down, which is relatively shallow. Shallow quakes are typically felt more strongly at the surface.

Preliminary data suggest the quake struck along the Paicines Fault. David Oppenheimer, a USGS seismologist in Menlo Park, says the area is very active. It´s near the meeting place of the Calaveras, Sargent and San Andreas faults.
