Jumping Frogs Will Return To Ponds

Sponsored by:

Calaveras County´s celebrated jumping frogs will be returned to selected ponds after each spring´s competition, so they don´t spread diseases or their population into new areas.

California Department of Fish and Game officials worried some competitors would release the frogs into new areas, where they could replace endangered native frogs – or that the frogs could pick up diseases during the competition they could spread to wild populations.

Organizers of the Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee inspired by Mark Twain agreed to urge those competitors to turn over their frogs after the contest.

They´ll be released into selected local ponds approved by the department.
