Old Air Force One Disassembled, Moved

Sponsored by:

Technicians will disassemble the gleaming Boeing 707 that carried seven U.S. presidents over one million miles as Air Force One. The Boeing jetliner with tail number 2700 has been roosting in a hanger at San Bernardino International Airport since its final flight on September eighth, 2001. The plane eventually will be reassembled inside a new transportation pavilion at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Boeing technicians begin disassembly of the blue, silver, and white aircraft Friday during a brief “Operation Homeward Bound” ceremony. The presidential seal will be removed during the ceremony. The plane, known as “The Spirit of ´76,” flew every president since Richard Nixon. It was most used by President Reagan from 1981 to 1989. Disassembly is expected to take up to eight weeks.
