Legislators Upset Over Logging Practices

Sponsored by:

State Legislators criticize both the Republican Bush administration and Democratic Davis administration for logging practices they say hurt California´s environment.

They´re pushing 10 bills and resolutions to discourage clear cutting and harvesting of ancient trees, and asking Congress to reinstate logging limits rejected by the U.S. Forest Service for Sierra Nevada national forests.

The state legislation would pre-empt Governor Davis´ Board of Forestry, which the lawmakers say has not done enough to protect watersheds or wildlife.

The California Forestry Association says legislators are basing their assumptions on old rhetoric. It says modern loggers do respect California´s environmental values.
