Environmentalists Sue to Block Logging

Sponsored by:

Environmental groups are suing to stop the cutting of fire breaks in three Sierra Nevada national forests. They say the cuts could actually increase the risk of forest fires. But the logging is backed by an unusual coalition of timber interests and local environmental activists who also are suing, saying the U.S. Forest Service´s plans don´t go far enough.

The Quincy Library Group´s proposal to cut extensive forest clearings to slow the advance of wildfires is in proposed revisions to the Forest Service´s plan for 11 million acres of Sierra national forests. As a result, more large scale logging would be allowed in portions of the Tahoe, Plumas, and Lassen national forests than elsewhere on Sierra federal land.
